Rule #1 – Mindset -Understand that dating for over 50s is different than almost any other kind of dating. The circumstances of over 50 singles who are on the dating scene requires doing things differently than 20 or 30 somethings who date in order to be successful.
Rule#2 – We all have families therefore we all have baggage. Most over 50s singles have been in long term relationships, often marriages, many with children and that means baggage. If you end up dating more long-term the topic will and should come up – but wait until you have had a chance to cover all the great things about you before unpacking your bags. And if talking about or thinking about your ex for more than a split second, gives you any sort of pleasure, well then you need to pay attention to Rule #4.
Rule#4 - Take time to understand where you have been and where you are going. If you are in the over 50s singles crowd, you've probably made a decision to pursue “phase 2” (or 3) of your life. This can be a great opportunity to do it right the second (or third) time – but only if you take an honest look at where you have been. Now is a good time to learn how you can improve yourself, instead of “changing” your partner (how did that work for ya’ last time?) It can be hard work, but it will be worth it to have a clear idea of what you really want this time around. From self-help to therapy, there are lots of options. At least get the process started before you start dating again.
Rule #5 – Have fun! Dating For Over 50s is a very serious thing. Most of us can remember back to our 20’s when our focus was on finding a mate to have a family and build our careers with. Now that you are one of the over 50s singles shift your focus to finding your soul mate who can share your interests and activities. It's a great time to let loose and really have some fun. Start with what you know and like, but be open to new things. You can open yourself up to a whole new group of people by just picking up a new hobby or interest.
